If free shipping kicks in at $50 and your cart is $44, adding a $6 item you'll actually use is cheaper than a $9 shipping fee — and you get something for it. Just don't add things you don't need to chase the threshold.
Keep a mental list of small consumables you always need — batteries, toiletries, pantry staples — to top up a cart to the free-ship minimum with something genuinely useful.
Skip shipping entirely
Buy-online-pickup-in-store and curbside are free at most large retailers and often ready within hours. For anything you need soon, it beats paying for expedited delivery.
It also sidesteps porch theft and shipping damage, and makes returns easier since you can hand the item back at the same counter if it's wrong.
Use memberships you already have
