Ancestry discounts: the 30% is real, but only for the first year

The AARP discount, precisely
AARP members get 30% off a World Explorer or All Access subscription, claimed by entering an AARP membership number on Ancestry's site — a separate field from the standard promo code box, so it will not work typed as a coupon.
Ancestry's own terms are unambiguous about the limit: the 30% discount is applicable for the first year of your subscription. AARP's benefit page adds a detail worth knowing — if you already have an Ancestry account, the discount applies when you renew for a year rather than being unavailable to you.
There is a slight inconsistency between the two sources. Ancestry describes it as 30% off a six-month membership for the first year; AARP describes a one-year subscription. Check which term you are actually buying at checkout.
What it renews at
This is the part almost nobody publishes, and it is the only number that matters over time. From Ancestry's own AARP page:
World Explorer renews at $99.95 every six months.
All Access renews at $149 every six months.
That is roughly $200 and $298 a year respectively, at full price, automatically, until you cancel. A 30% first-year discount against that is a genuine saving on year one and nothing at all on year two.
Is AARP membership worth it just for this
AARP membership runs $15 for the first year when you sign up for automatic renewal.
Against 30% off All Access, the arithmetic is not close — a $15 membership fee to save roughly 30% of a $258 first year is comfortably worthwhile, and AARP membership carries hundreds of other discounts besides. There is also a second benefit here: 30% off a regularly priced DNA kit when bought with a qualifying genealogy subscription.
The caveat is the same as the subscription's: AARP membership also auto-renews, at the standard rate rather than $15.
The military discount
20% off the All Access plan, with verification through SheerID. Coverage extends to active duty, veterans, National Guard and reservists.
All Access is the relevant plan for this audience because it includes the Fold3 military records database, so the discount is attached to the version of Ancestry that actually holds service records.
At 20% against AARP's 30%, an AARP member who also qualifies for the military discount is better off using AARP — though not both, and Ancestry does not publish a stacking rule.
Paying upfront beats the discount some of the time
Ancestry prices month-to-month and upfront differently, and the gap is large. All Access is around $54.99 a month billed monthly, or about $39.83 a month paying six months upfront. World Explorer drops to roughly $24.83 a month upfront.
That is close to a 28% reduction for committing to six months, available to anyone with no membership or verification required. If you do not qualify for AARP or military, paying upfront is the discount.
The free trial, and how to not get charged
Every plan includes a 14-day free trial with full access. To avoid being charged you need to cancel at least two days before it ends, and monthly plans require at least two business days' notice before any renewal date.
DNA kits are refundable within 60 days, minus a $15 processing fee. Gift memberships are worth knowing about for a different reason: they are non-renewing by design, so there is no automatic charge when the term expires.
When the sales beat every discount
Ancestry discounts heavily around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Mother's Day, and seasonal promotions have reached considerably deeper than 30%.
If you are not in a hurry, the pattern favours waiting. If you are an AARP member, the 30% is available year-round rather than seasonally, which makes it the reliable option rather than the deepest one.
